疮 药
in the late 16th century, revolt broke out in the netherlands against spanish rule. medical knowledge was then in its infancy, and surgeons believed that human fat was an efficacious salve for wounded men. after the ill-fated spanish siege of ostend in 1602, during which over 2,000 spaniards were killed in a single night, the ground was strewn everywhere with arms, hands and legs. this proved an irresistible source of raw material for the medical fraternity, who flocked from the city after dark to scrape the fat from the bodies and bring it back in bags.
